Description

In Its Bigger Than Hip Hop; M. K. Asante; Jr. looks at the rise of a generation that sees beyond the smoke and mirrors of corporate-manufactured hip hop and is building a movement that will change not only the face of pop culture; but the world.Asante; a young firebrand poet; professor; filmmaker; and activist who represents this movement; uses hip hop as a springboard for a larger discussion about the urgent social and political issues affecting the post-hip-hop generation; a new wave of youth searching for an understanding of itself outside the self-destructive; corporate hip-hop monopoly.Through insightful anecdotes; scholarship; personal encounters; and conversations with youth across the globe as well as icons such as Chuck D and Maya Angelou; Asante illuminates a shift that can be felt in the crowded spoken-word joints in post-Katrina New Orleans; seen in the rise of youth-led organizations committed to social justice; and heard around the world chanting "Its bigger than hip hop."

Now I am looking forward to watching "The September Issue" about the inner working of Vogue USA and Anna Wintour.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What makes this woman tick?By Catherine SleglThis book gives us insight into fashions most important personage. We read her background. the path she followed in her rise ( which makes it obvious that she reached the top using sharp teeth and sheer guts) and we learn a bit of what to do when one finds oneself in her sights. She is a woman to admire. as this book shows. Not necessarily a woman to like or emulate. The book undoubtedly makes Anna angry. there are some ugly moments in her life.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Hard to know her....By Susan H.Much info seemed redundant in the telling of her life. Her private and insolent character was shown over and over and perhaps that reconfirms what we already knew about her life.
