Settlers continued migrating to Clark County; and by 1880; there were enough settlers to petition for organization. On May 23; 1881; Clark County became an official county. The first courthouse was built in 1888 in Clark. Besides Clark; the following towns were soon formed: Bradley; Carpenter; Crocker; Elrod; Garden City; Melham; Naples; Raymond; Vienna; and Willow Lake. Clark County; located in northeast South Dakota in the Glacial Lakes and Prairie Region; is home to some 4;500 residents.

(oh wow the fall colors).I never knew this town even existed. I found that President Grant lived in this town for several years 20 years before the Civil Was. This town was where the rich settled in the early 1800s. In the 1900s the rich left this town in droves to resettle Chicago when it burnt down. Town went from 70.000 to 3000 in just a few years. The Mississippi River was dredged deep to allow steamboats to dock in Galena. When the river rose every year they had built an enclosed metal dam that; circled the town with water proof gates to keep the town high and dry. I found the books in the town were a little on the costly side. SO.... I went on line to and of course found the same books with a better price. This Book is full of information and pictures. Believe me take a trip to this town. You will love it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book about our small historic townBy ShumateExcellent book about our small historic town. Ours found its way out of our library somehow so this is a replacement. The photo on the front was actually taken on our lawn a century ago!
