Schulmanbeautiful language; but confusing characterization. monna vanna does not seem to know exactly who she is; and Im not certain that anyone in this play knows what they are doing and; more importantly; why they are doing it. but there is no denying that the language is rich and full (even though it is a translation) and quite delicious to speak out loud. I have read other Maeterlinck pieces; but it was years ago and I dont recall them now. this particular play I reread recently because for some reason it stuck in my head. very reminiscent of ayn rands romanticism in her books and plays and she certainly owe no small debt to Maeterlinck. I was struck several times by the similarity in some of the phrases.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. heroic characters and a captivating plotBy Sean MurphyI enjoyed this play set with heroic characters and a captivating plot. I dont remember much else because I read it nine years ago. Sorry!6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great DramaBy A CustomerAn extrodinary Play. In the style of romantic realism; it documents the events surrounding a military seige; and how one woman can save the city if she spends a night with the enemy general. Rational and well written; it is a masterpiece. Some of the best two person scenes ever writen.
