Description

Winner of the 29th annual Lambda Literary Award for LGBT StudiesAll museums are sex museums. In Sex Museums; Jennifer Tyburczy takes a hard look at the formation of Western sexualitymdash;particularly how categories of sexual normalcy and perversity are formedmdash;and asks what role museums have played in using display as a technique for disciplining sexuality. Most museum exhibits; she argues; assume that white; patriarchal heterosexuality and traditional structures of intimacy; gender; and race represent national sexual culture for their visitors. Sex Museums illuminates the history of such heteronormativity at most museums and proposes alternative approaches for the future of public display projects; while also offering the reader curatorial tacticsmdash;what she calls queer curatorshipmdash;for exhibiting diverse sexualities in the twenty-first century.Tyburczy shows museums to be sites of culture-war theatrics; where dramatic civic struggles over how sex relates to public space; genealogies of taste and beauty; and performances of sexual identity are staged. Delving into the history of erotic artifacts; she analyzes how museums have historically approached the collection and display of the material culture of sex; which poses complex moral; political; and logistical dilemmas for the Western museum. Sex Museums unpacks the history of the museum and its intersections with the history of sexuality to argue that the Western museum contextmdash;from its inception to the presentmdash;marks a pivotal site in the construction of modern sexual subjectivity.

Super short story; not same size as other novelsBy Michelles Book Club ReviewJust be aware that The Frozen Deep is a short/tiny book of just over 80 pages; the size of a pamphlet; and not the size of some of the other Collins novels. Keep this in mind to deterimine if the price is worth it. Book is so small they cant print the name of it or the authors name on the binder.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Another good Collins readBy JetpackThe Frozen Deep is a novella based on a play that Wilkie Collins write; with changes by Charles Dickens. It is about a woman and the two men who want her and a trip to the North Pole (Arctic expeditions being big at the time). The Frozen Deep is much shorter than the Woman in White; or the Moonstone; so it can be read quickly. I especially liked the one scene on the ice; as one of the characters struggles to maintain his control. As is often the case; much of the problems could be avoided if the characters talked to each other; but that wouldnt be much of a story. The Frozen Deep is an enjoyable read; and worthy addition to your free Kindle library. If you liked Mr. Collins other work; give the Frozen Deep a try.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Revenge is a Dish Best Served ColdBy CC ThomasThis short novel was so interesting to me because it was orginally a play written by Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens and was performed all over England; even in front of Queen Victoria. Apparently it was performed to rave reviews and even caused tears in the auience. It was based on stories of Arctic expeditions which was so popular at the time.Okay; I didnt cry but it was quite a captivating story of Victorian England. The plot involves a lovers triangle. Clara has someone become the love interest of a rather intense sailor named Richard. He assumes they are to be married and leaves on a long trip. Clara has never promised herself to Richard and during his absence falls in love with Frank. When Richard returns and finds his love betrothed to another; he becomes rather crazy and vows revenge on Frank. As fate would have (or a good plot twist); Richard and Frank are paired up on a sailing expedition to the Arctic. In what has to be the epitome of a Victorian romance; the fate of Frank hangs in the balance as he is stranded on the ice with only Richard to save him.Again; if you love Victorian English literature; this is truly a delight. Plus; the free Kindle price makes it really hard to pass up. While I was not moved to tears; I did enjoy it
