More about Finland than SibeliusBy A readerThe subtitle--"A Composers Life and the Awakening of Finland"--places the emphasis in the wrong order: this book is primarily taken up with the history of the modern Finnish state and only secondarily with Sibelius and his role in it. Indeed; at times its possible to read several pages with nary a mention of Sibelius. Some of those pages can; unfortunately; become quite tedious as the level of detail provided in describing the independence movement becomes granular to a fault. Minute observation of how a particular gala event transpired--the costumes worn; synopses of individual dramatic performances--tested the limits of my own interest. At the same time; the author can be an accomplished story teller and one certainly does gain an appreciation of Sibelius as a patriotic artist; something that isnt necessarily self-evident in the music itself.
