Foa analyzes the work in a new way finds that the artist was interested in different kinds of vision ways to represent visual experiences. Pointillism the optical mixing of colors are here (p. 88ff.); but. as Foa demonstrates. Seurats investigations into vision go much further.Chapter 1. "Seeing in Series" - Seurat spent parts of 4 summers in 4 port towns on the Normandy coast. In each port he painted a series of seascapes. The canvases depict whatever could be seen from different places as he moved around. using vision bodily movement to make sense of his surroundings (p.25). Chapter 2. The analysis of the multiple spatial systems in The Grande Jatte (pp. 70-78) is fascinating. Seurats painted borders frames are discussed here (pp. 102-111) in later chapters. Chapter 3. Foa discusses Seurats painting of the Eiffel Tower (6 x 9 in.).Note to my 12th-grade English teacher: Yes. there is academic jargon here ("foreground" "privilege" used as verbs. for example); but. in my opinion. the authors ideas come through clearly. There are 60 color illustrations 81 bw illus.
