A great recounting of how Hollywood used musicBy TR JohnsonThis turned out to be a very well-researched and written book that traces the evolution of how Hollywood incorporated songs and music into its films. It begins with the Silent Movie era and does a fine job of recounting the perceptual and technical issues associated with music in the transition to talkies. The movie musicals heyday was based on a confluence of events and people that were unique and remarkable and when just a few components of that magical mix were compromised; they almost virtually disappeared from the large screen.Other reviewers have noted that the books thumb-sized photos that refuse to scale-up on Kindle and are thus un-viewable for anyone with normal eyes as the reason this book doesnt merit 5 stars.My 12-year-old musically-inclined daughter read the book; too; and she really enjoyed it as we have many of the classic movie musical DVDs in our home.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. SONGS OF HOLLYWOOD: TINY ILLUSTRATIONSBy Bob BergJust received this book and was astonished over the tiny postage-size illustrations. I have never seen anything like this before. In looking over the book it seems very informative and the authors seem to have done their job; but whose idea was it to illustrate with stamp like pictures? The publisher? the authors? If there was not enough room they could have used quarter page stills sparingly or as the prior reviewer said no illustrations at all. Makes the whole layout of the book ridiculous. I have given this book three stars since I have just browsed through the book and it looks like it is going to be an interesting read; but the book deserves 1 star for the sloppy layout.
