Gravesend; Brooklyn (Then and Now)

[DOC] Gravesend; Brooklyn (Then and Now) by Joseph Ditta at Arts-Photography

Description

Almost every American city enjoys a magical time in history when all the tumblers of fate; luck; hard work; and good fortune seem to fall into place; and the city enjoys a golden era. The 1940s were just such a time in the city of Bluefield. At the dawn of the decade; the United States was on the verge of entering the greatest war the world has ever known; and the coal that flowed through Norfolk and Western Railways Bluefield yard was destined to fuel an Allied victory. But there is so much more than war and coal at the heart of Bluefields story. The 1940s were a time of inspiration for men like Nobel laureate John F. Nash Jr.; a time of artistic discovery for men like Joseph Dodd of Bluefield State College; a time of valor and heroism for Congressional Medal of Honor recipient S.Sgt. Junior Spurrier; and a period of success in business; arts; and professional fields for hundreds of Bluefields sons and daughters.

Review
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Deep in the Heart of BrooklynBy Victor FortezzaAs a lifelong resident of Brooklyn. I looked forward to Mr. Dittas book. I was not disappointed. Gravesend. Brooklyn is part of the Arcadia Publishing Then and Now series. From its handsome cover. through its nearly 100 pages. to its sepia-like rear cover. it offers a wonderful pictorial history of a large swath of the Borough of Churches. With great care. Mr. Ditta places photos of the same tract (before and after). on each page. The accompanying text is clear. concise and free of error. What fun it was to see areas I visit or pass through regularly as they were long ago. How fascinating that several structures still exist. albeit in altered form. I was reminded of how enthralled I was by the pictures on display in the Daniel George Funeral Home. which showed what the Gravesend Bay waterfront was like before the construction of the Belt Parkway. Anyone who has a fondness for Brooklyn. as Mr. Ditta obviously does. will enjoy this book. How sweet it is - fuhgeddaboutit!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
