Those interviewed speak about their early years. the compulsion each felt to follow such a demanding career. the teachers who guided them. their attitudes towards performing in concert versus recording. Glenn Gould. for instance. hated the former produced most of his work in recording studios whereas several other performers seemed to revel in public demonstrations of their craft. Some talk of technique. others recall little of their early training other than that it seemed to work. No two pianists had quite the same experiences; some knew from a very early age that this was to be their career while others became seriously committed only later. Some enjoyed the travel. others did not. Some managed to combine career with family. others did not. Good book despite some minor technicalitiesBy kcgThis is a very interesting book and although dated. is still relevant with regards to the world of the professional pianist. Although no two pianists are completely alike. there still are common threads which connect those with the lifestyle of a professional. classical pianist. I would have given the book a five-star review. however. it is full of misspellings including a recurring "conceit" for "concert". Nevertheless. it is a good read.
