Our family moved to Sayville in the 1970s from New York City largely because of her great memories of the school. She absolutely loved the book; has reread it a number of times and says its the best gift she ever received! Mr. Whitehouse; thank you for writing this book and helping one woman recall some very happy memories of her childhood.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. If You Live in Sayville - You Should Read this BookBy Inspector ClouseauThis book is well researched; well written and easy to read. By telling the story of these "orphan heroes;" it helps to paint a human picture of what the Great Depression would have been like in the town of Sayville; and by extension; it sketches out what qualities made (and makes) greater American society beyond Sayville endure through the challenges of the times past and present. It also serves more simply as a fascinating history of the town at that time. It helped me to better appreciate and develop a deeper understanding of the various families and places of historical significance - many of which still remain here today.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This Book MattersBy Suzy LittlestoneThis book tells about people who were not privileged or entitled. They were of different races and socio-economic levels. Their lives impacted a group of about 45 orphans in the town of Sayville. Many of these children grew up to be heroes of World War II. And the people who took care of them -- without government support or handouts of any kind -- were heroes too!If you want to be inspired; read this book. It will show you what true heroes are.
