New Yorks Lower East Side is the birthplace of everything from organized crime to anarchist movements. In the nineteenth century; an influx of struggling immigrants seeking opportunity met the harsh realities of industrialization. Poverty and squalor fueled a vicious battle for power and political clout. Local historian Eric Ferrara reveals the wicked history of Americas most infamous neighborhood; where the abounding graffiti is a testament to the soul and spirit of the slum.

I should have read it on the IPad; but the very fact that I have to keep going to the back to look at the images; is a pain.Without images; and with a style of writing that is now obviously hard to follow; it becomes a difficult book to read. there is some wonderful material in the book; but the chore of closing my eyes and constantly visualising stuff is too much of a pain.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. First comes TheoryBy A. ClyburnThis is a great book; and though the format wasnt as I expected at the beginning - the information was priceless. Definitely a plus and a recommended read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy Hanneke HollanderVery interesting
