Hans Memling (French Edition)

[PDF] Hans Memling (French Edition) by Alfred Michiels at Arts-Photography

Description

Surrealists appeared in the aftermath of World War I with a bang: revolution of thought; creativity; and the wish to break away from the past and all that was left in ruins. This refusal to integrate into the bourgeois society was also a leitmotiv of Dada artists; and Andreacute; Breton asserted that Dada does not produce perspective. Surrealism emerged amidst such feeling. Surrealists and Dada artists often changed from one movement to another. They were united by their superior intellectualism and the common goal to break free from the norm. Describing the Surrealists with their aversive resistance to the system; the author brings a new approach which strives to be relative and truthful. Provocation and cultural revolution: arenrsquo;t Surrealists after all just a direct product of creative individualism in this unsettled period?

This is a large format book with excellent reproductions of most if not all his paintings. There are also representative works of many of his contemporaries ndash; van der Weyden. van Eyck. Dirk Bouts. etc.. presumably included for comparative purposes. However. if you are looking for contemporary text to accompany the illustrations. you wonrsquo;t get it here. The author ndash; Alfred Michiels ndash; was a French art historian and man of letters who lived in the 19th century. His prose (translated from French) is flowery and romantic in the extreme. and there is minimal relationship between the writing and the specific images appearing in this volume. There is nothing wrong with the writing per se ndash; just keep in mind that it is very much the product of an earlier era.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. beautiful book!!By Dita von KriegAbsolutley beautiful book. If you love Flemish paintings this is the book for you. I became a fan of Memlings after taking art history. I had to write a paper on one of his works at the Frick museum. An extraordinary talent. His religious paintings of Madonna and child and his portraits are my favorite. Beautifully bound book. Highly recommended.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
