SwansonVirginia City; MT; is almost defined by certain images: the notorious hangmans house and the "road agent" grave markers on boot hill; Henry Edgar posing with his mining gear; the variety store fronted by its full figure portrait of a Zouave. But Virginia City is more than a restored frontier mining town; its a living community that managed to survive beyond its glory days; as surely as it does today during the cold weather months when the tourists dont visit.Evalyn Batten Johnson; on behalf of the Thompson-Hickman County Library in Virginia City; has assembled a collection of this communitys photographic history. A few of these pictures are well known; most of the aforementioned photographs are here (but the famous Zouave is nowhere to be found). But there are many others that havent been widely seen. Among the rare portraits are Sarah Gammon Bickford; born into slavery but destined to become Montanas first career woman; who owned and operated the Virginia City Water Company out of the hangmans building. There are rare views of Zena Hoff (a local historian has said that she disliked being photographed); a former Ziegfeld girl and Mack Sennett bathing beauty who assisted the Boveys in restoring the interiors of many vintage buildings. Several buildings are shown in their original state; many were later or completely rebuilt by Charlie and Sue Bovey.Some of the pictures in this collection will strike the reader as mundane; theyre a bit like family photographs; of great interest primarily to those who are familiar or closely related to the subjects. Some; like that of a smiling Bob Gohn tending his store; beg for more exposition. A few have a somewhat tenuous connection to Virginia City. The dress-up picture of Calamity Jane on page 66 is interesting; but theres no indication of its having been posed in Virginia City; or proof that Jane put on airs whenever she revisited her former hometown. Maria Virginia Slades portrait is a welcome addition; one can easily imagine the wrath that erupted from her stony visage when she learned her husband had been lynched. And in case youve never seen it; the unfortunate George Lanes "club foot" is pictured as its seen in the Thompson-Hickman Museum.This book will be more of interest to those who live in or near Virginia City; or who have family connections with that community. It might also be of interest to costumers and historians as it provides glimpses of day-to-day clothing and fashions of both gentry and common folk.
