Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) was an artist of eclectic styles; but remains perhaps best known for his personal pantheon of demons; Hell creatures and night monsters; which he drew in ever-more elaborate configurations; driven on by alcoholic dementia. This mania peaked in the 1880s; augmented by explorations of infernal tortures and human butchershops. These 52 images; dating from 1879 and 1889; showcase the artists deranged vision at its most inventive; delirious; darkly humorous and at times sadistic.
