Nobody knows how to tell a story like Bobby Norfolk; and here he tells his own life story. Norfolk grew up in hardscrabble neighborhoods of Saint Louis; Missouri; during the 1950s and 60s; sometimes walking to elementary school from an apartment his parents could not afford to heat. Lifting himself up by force of will and God-given talent; Norfolk defeated a childhood stutter to become a high school dramatist and later an exceptional college student. The path was never easymdash;and often frightening. With men of color being killed all-too-frequently in America; Norfolk sought a personal identity based upon talent and hard work; but also upon where safety and justice might be found. He tells these storiesmdash;some heartwarming or humorous; some frightful and treacherousmdash;honestly; with a graceful mindfulness that all would do well to emulate.

Arleta was originally a watercolor painter and many of her techniques are reminiscent of watercolor. However; what she is able to accomplish by glazing with oils is amazing. If you want to learn oil glazing and how to paint realistically; this book will not disappoint. It is well written and detailed. The painting demonstrations are easy to follow. If you follow Arletas techniques your oil paintings truly will "glow". Arleta uses traditional oils but I work in water soluble oils and have achieved the same results. This book is an excellent guide for both the beginning and experienced painter.51 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Great Foundation for Glazing Techniques!By Dorothy WilliamsHands down; I consider this the best book on explaining glazing techniques. There are not many books out there that are completely devoted to this special technique. This is great for beginners because she explains each step in such clear detail. Everything from color combination; sequence of layering and basic composition is very easy to understand for someone new at this. If you want to learn the basics of Venetian /classical painting; this is the one for you.My only wish is that portraits would be explored in the book; not just still life.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Radiant Oils is a must have for technique!By D. WoodI am new to oiils and mainly work in acrylics using a glazing technique of sorts. I tried to apply the same to oils and the transition between mediums was a disaster. While looking through the Oils section of books on ; I came across Arleta Pechs Radiant Oils. I checked out the Look Inside feature and from what I saw; I knew this was what I needed. Arletas instructions in layering with oils and especially the medium to oil ratio was just the information I was looking for. I recommend this book especially to those artists who are coming from an acrylic background and like using the glazing technique. This is the missing link of info for that transitioning! I love it and recommend this book.
