I found this challenging to read. with a very broad vocabulary and some regionalisms that I couldnt find in my dictionaries. However. the descriptive language is absolutely gorgeous! Roth paints a vivid picture of the scenes and his characters that even transcended my limitations with the language. In addition. while parts of the story were grim. this tale was not as depressing as a lot of the German literature we read in my class. I also appreciated seeing life in an eastern European shtetl and in New York City in the early 20th century from the perspective of a poor Jewish family. The ending was a little weak and seemed more fantasy-like than most of the book. but I like happy endings.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. HiobBy Christel DetschOne of the great books of world literature. much overlooked. Captivating how the author bridges two worlds. the old and the new. A great edition also.
