I do not believe in a hollow earth. Thats not to say I disbelieve it. I just havent been convinced one way or the other yet. My low opinion of this book has nothing to do with Standish "dissing" my belief. because (as far as this subject goes) I have no belief to "diss". The only reason I even bought this book was because I thought it would be really interesting and fun to read about the different beliefs. myths. and scientific theories on this topic. I figured this book would allow me to do just that. I was wrong.I have three problems with "Hollow Earth".First. Standish only goes as far back as Halley (the guy who presented the hollow earth idea as a scientific theory rather than a mythological story or a religious belief). Considering that the hollow earth belief was around long before Halley came onto the scene. Id call that odd. All that other stuff gets a couple of pages worth of mention and thats it. My second problem ties into this. The second issue is padding. This book has lots of it. The good stuff would probably take up about 20-50 pages. Everything else didnt need to be there at all. This may have been done with good intetions. though. Standish provides a detailed biographical account of Halley. Symmes. and most other figures related to the hollow earth belief. Makes sense. After all. its typically easier to grasp something if you understand the context. Unforturnately. he provides way too much. It gets to the point where it ceases to be background information and instead becomes a bunch of very frustrating rabbit trails. Nearly an entire chapter talks about the life of Edgar Allan Poe and a summary of his one novel; almost none of it has anything to do with the hollow earth belief. If Standishd had a better editor. I could have been spared all this. Plus. the book would have had more room to get into the ancient myths that. as I mentioned before. were disappointingly ommitted.Ive saved the worst for last. though. The third problem is the authors writing style. Im not sure if Standish has a bad attitude or if he simply tried too hard to give the book a conversational tone. He seems to have a need to throw in his own two cents every few paragraphs. He comes across as someone who has a minimal. at best. respect for the hollow earth theory. This disrespect carries over to both Halley and Symmes. He approaches both with a very arrogant attitude. like he expects them to have known better. It honestly felt like Standish was confusing consensus with scientific proof. Halley and Symmes went against the general consensus of the scientific establishment; therefore. they (in Standishs mind) must have been wrong. They very well could have been wrong. but popular opinion is not the way to determine that. Why dont I give it the lowest rating? Well. Standish actually does a good job explaining Halley and Symmes theories. Theyre both very interesting and the only reason I know about them at all is from reading this book. That alone bumps it up to a two-star rating. That said. this is easily the WORST non-fiction book Ive ever read. Its a book that barely scatches the surface of a truly fascinating subject. As mentioned in my reviews title. its a shallow book about a hollow earth.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy TODD PRATUMPacked with scholarly detail. a feast!
