World music emerged as a commercial and musical category in the 1980s; but in some sense music has always been global. Through the metaphor of encounters; Music and Globalization explores the dynamics that enable or hinder cross-cultural communication through music. In the stories told by the contributors; we meet well-known players such as David Byrne; Peter Gabriel; Sting; Ry Cooder; Fela Kuti; and Gilberto Gil; but also lesser-known characters such as the Senegalese Afro-Cuban singer Laba Sosseh and Raramuri fiddle players from northwest Mexico. This collection demonstrates that careful historical and ethnographic analysis of global music can show us how globalization operates and what; if anything; we as consumers have to do with it.

GunnIts wonderful when a pattern this pretty is incredibly simple to work up -- says intermediate. but a beginner who is careful about counts should have no trouble at all. (Do use the stitch markers. though -- itll make things far simpler. Yes. even if youre not normally a marker user. Im not either and capitulated on this one. because the increases are no joke.) Instructions are clear and accurate. and the result is just lovely -- especially for something worked top-down in a single piece (not counting the button tab. or the pom-pom cord if youre into that sort of thing). I definitely expect to do a second iteration of this one. either when the recipient outgrows the first or when my niece realizes that the one I just finished up isnt destined for her...1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
