The old translation by Malleson (with Lidenbrock Axel; NOT Hardwigg Harry) is soundBy LibrarianWhile many; if not most; of Vernes works have suffered from less than perfect translations in the past; this one (more than any other) has suffered the indignity of being virtually re-written by an anonymous "translator" who thought he could tell the story better than Verne; not content to "merely" modify and add story content and dialogue; he even totally changed the main characters names. The result is more adaptation than translation. Fortunately; however; those name-changes make it easy to distinguish the real from the bogus. In any authentic translation the main character is Professor Lidenbrock (or sometimes Liedenbrock); and his youthful assistant is Axel; in the bogus version; the main character is Professor Hardwigg and his assistant is Harry. Download a sample; and the first one or two screens/pages of Chapter 1 will reveal the all-important names.Because frequently gathers reviews from various; earlier editions and lumps them all together; I have no way of knowing if this review will be attached to the version for which it was intended. For that reason; I have made it generic and applicable to any and all versions. But you will certainly want to read the story (in English) as close as possible to how Verne originally wrote it (in French). That means you must avoid the Hardwigg and Harry version; and only go with Lidenbrock and Axel versions. The fake version may be enjoyable in its own right; but it is not the way Verne chose to tell it.The authentic; old but sound; public domain translation is by F. A. Malleson; and a free version of it will be found in the Kindle Store under "voyage au centre de la terre. English." In English; Mallesons version is often (but not always) titled A JOURNEY TO [or INTO] THE INTERIOR OF THE EARTH rather than the more familiar A JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH. Free and inexpensive editions often (and disappointingly) fail to provide illustrations of a series of runes referred to early in the novel; but this doesnt adversely affect the story; and; in any edition; their absence is by no means a deal-breaker.Newer translations have been made by Robert Baldick; William Butcher; and Ron Miller; but not being in the public domain; those editions are not free. Virtually complete sets of Verne (in older translations) are currently available for as little as $.99. A magnificent one from Book House; titled JULES VERNE; THE EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGES; provides a whopping 47 of his books; including this one. (Other ebook bundlers use that same title to present 54 books; but "only" 46 of them are in English.) The very best set is from from Delphi (for $2.99 or less); but it; too; has some works still in French.Vernes story may seem a tad slow-moving to some modern readers; but those willing and able to adjust to his descriptive writing style and leisurely pacing will find this to be an enjoyable and memorable adventure; far grander than any of the movie versions based on it. And once you experience this one by Verne; youll want to read all his others.
