Description

Religious and cultural diversity has been a key feature of the city of Leeds for almost 200 years and has resulted in the building of many fine churches; chapels and synagogues; these are now joined by mosques; gurdwaras and a mandir. Tracing the architectural response to the changing conditions of the inner city and suburbs; this book examines the buildings associated with the groups of newcomers to Leeds; thus charting a great change in the citys religious life. It is suggested that both the brand-new purpose-built places of worship and the way in which existing buildings have been adapted also reveal significant continuities with how Christian groups expanded in the 19th century. The alterations made to Leeds churches to adapt them to changing liturgical requirements and to the pastoral and social requirements of the present day are discussed. The context of the architectural expression of faith in Leeds in the 20th and early 21st centuries will also assist those concerned with the conservation of places of worship.

The Kindle edition makes this history book available in a modern format which makes it more accessible to readers such as myself who are shying away from the paperback format. The book content covers the history of the home and property through several prominent families prior to Carl Sandburg which illuminated the historical roots of Flatrock to Charleston. There are also many historic pictures which the reader can enlarge with pinch and pull; an iPad feature that is better than the printed page. I hope that many more local archive histories with convert to Kindle versions so they wont be lost on the back shelves of local libraries.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great history!By CustomerI never knew the history of the Carl Sandburg home but only that it existed. It is located in my home town and I regret that I had never known the importance or significance; until recently. Beautiful grounds and interesting history. A great read; enveloped in rich story telling; history and pictures.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
