The purpose of this book is to honor the scholarly legacy of Charles R. Forker with a series of essays that address the problem of literary influence in original ways and from a variety of perspectives. The emphasis throughout is on the sort of careful; exhaustive; evidence-based scholarship to which Forker dedicated his entire professional life. Although wide-ranging and various by design; the essays in this book never lose sight of three discrete yet overlapping areas of literary inquiry that create a unity of perspective amid the diversity of approaches: 1) the formation of play texts; textual analysis; and editorial practice; 2) performance history and the material playing conditions from Shakespearersquo;s time to the present; including film as well as stage representations; and 3) the world; both cultural and literary; in which Shakespeare and his contemporaries worked and to which they bequeathed an artistic legacy that continues to be re-interpreted and re-defined by a whole new set of cultural and literary pressures. Eschewing any single; predetermined ideological perspective; the essays in this book call our attention to how the simplest questions or observations can open up provocative and unexpected scholarly vistas. In so doing; they invite us into a subtly re-configured world of literary influence that draws us into new; often unexpected; ways of seeing and understanding the familiar.

An Absolute Must For Students In DoubtBy JMThe thing that Will Hines gets right is there isnt much to be taught in the way of improv *content* through a book - he keeps it pretty straightforward. The thing that Will Hines blows out of the water is using personal experience in improv - not only his own. but that of other students and teachers - to highlight aspects of improv we are all afraid to talk about. Ruts. needing breaks. feeling bad when you walk off the stage. analyzing yourself and your improv into corner. and so on.This book made me realize that there are people like me everywhere in improv. that it isnt always perfect - even among the greats! - and gave me a new kind of courage and comfortability on the stage. An absolute must for any student that has thought. "wow. by trying hard. Im getting bad at this." or "can people like me really do improv?"2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting perspective on improv. and very different from the ...By Chad D. WardInteresting perspective on improv. and very different from the Upright Citizens Brigades Comedy Improvisation Manual or Truth in Comedy. the two standards in improv. Will Hines has a less analytical/procedural approach and is the first improv book Ive found that offers solid advice for playing with problematic improvisors.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Should be required reading alongside the UCB ManualBy Peter BiermaId been following author Will Hines for many months on YouTube. Improv4Humans. etc.. and finally got to see him live while taking an improv 101 class at Upright Citizens Brigade where he actively performs. Later I learned he wrote this book. and I feel like it needs to be required reading alongside the class textbook "UCB Manual".Whereas the UCB manual addresses the "how-to" of improv. what I liked most about Wills book is how it addresses common challenges happening *internally*. That is to say: all the anxiety and fears that are common for newbies like me. He offers encouragement and advice for those things. and breaks down complex concepts into simple thoughts. For example. when talking about "Top of Intelligence" (a confusing concept to me). "Top of intelligence means not making your characters dumber than they should be." Brilliant! And all that said. I do not think you need to have read the UCB manual in order to enjoy it... it works on its own.Im hoping to do a book group. since the end of each chapter contains practice exercises to help put the concepts into action. Cant wait to try it out!
