Fun and Fascinating Overview of this Cultural IconBy Carol Simon LevinRichard Haw has created a fresh and fascinating; well-written and well-researched; witty and beautiful book exploring the history and cultural influence of the Brooklyn Bridge. The images are excellent; but so is the snappy writing and cogent analysis -- he provides a more nuanced view of public opinion of the bridge than appeared in David McCulloughs The Great Bridge and many other sources. I found his first two chapters (on the proposals predating John A. Roeblings and on the construction of the bridge itself) especially fascinating -- many facts; images; and details that I have seen nowhere else. Highly recommended!9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful and InformativeBy Patricia LickliderHaws collection of both color and black-and-white images surrounding the building and celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge is beautiful. Page after page of drawings; paintings; and photographs; plus informative surrounding text; chart the bridges building; opening; and early use. Considering the huge number of images; some in warm color; others of hard-to-find cartoons and drawings; this book is a bargain. After leafing through this handsomely produced volume; one understands why the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of American vision and engineering know-how.
