Inside the Artist's Studio

[DOC] Inside the Artist's Studio by Joe Fig at Arts-Photography

Description

In what ways does political trauma influence the art arising from it? Is there an aesthetic of war and exile in theatrical works that emerge from such experiences? Are there cultural markers defining such works from areas like Eastern Europe and Israel? This book considers these questions in an examination of plays; performances and theater artists that speak from a place of political violence and displacement. The authorrsquo;s critical inquiry covers a variety of theatrical experimentations; including Brechtian distancing; black humor; pastiche; surreal and hyper-real imagery; reversed chronologies and disrupted narratives. Drawing on postmodern theories and performance studies as well as interviews and personal statements from the artists discussed; this study explores the transformative power of the theater arts and their function as catalysts for social change; healing and remembrance.

I can relate to his passions to make art and his insatiable curiosity about the workings of the creative process itself. The artists he interviews are not necessarily chosen for their stature in the art world. though several have high profile careers. rather each one presents a unique perspective on how and why they became an artist as well as what drives their creative engines. For me. this isnt a book on any one medium or artistic ideology. its a book that celebrates the nature of artmaking through the eyes of fellow artists. and thats what makes it inspiring to read.I also want to point out how impressed I am with the paintings and dioramas Joe creates. He is not only a highly skilled craftsman with a keen eye for minute detail and nuance. he is able to capture a sense of place and intangible qualities of the artists personalities that go well beyond his mastery of the mediums he uses! I also recommend his first book. Inside the Painters Studio. that is equally intriguing and rich in inspiration.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
