This is the 10th Trollope novel I have read and it is excellent entertainmentBy Terra Hangenldquo; Is He Popenjoy?rdquo; captured my attention as I followed the adventures of young Mary. her devoted father the Dean. bachelor Lord George. his nasty older brother the Marquis. and a host of other interesting people in the countryside around London in the 1870s. The unpleasant Marquis upsets his family when he suddenly demands they all move out of the family home and away from the area. The Marquis has lived a self indulgent life in Italy and brings home a wife and a baby. who may be heir to the estate. Mary and Lord George marry and have to overcome bumps in their first months of marriage. while a legal battle ensues over whether the Marquisrsquo; baby is the legitimate heir. This novel is altogether a delight to read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Light Hearted Treatment of Serious IssuesBy CynthiaPopenjoy shares several of the same themes Trollope covered in "He Knew He was Right" but in a much lighter way. thanks goodness. which makes for much more enjoyment. Its the story of a young couple at the beginning of heir marriage. They have their share of rough edges to file down one to the other. Lord George. as a second son. is not on the best terms with the Marquis who his himself is none of too easy to get onwith with foreign wife and its mysterious circumstances.A delightful character. the Dean of the local parish. is Lady Marys devoted father who is liberal with his money but expects to get full value for his largese. Of course Mary loves and respects her father but to the same or maybe higher degree she feels for her husband? I know these situations are serious but Trollope skates around them with his traditional humor so the angst level is comfortable to the reader.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This makes a very engaging story and by all accounts ranks Trollope at a high level of great English AuthorsBy Coach ZAfter Wilkie Collins and Jane Austen I was searching for another Victorian Style writer and Trollope fit the situation. As it turned out Trollope is a master of creating personalities similar to the others. In Popenjoy you get to intimately know the characters personality but you never know specifically what turns the events will take. This makes a very engaging story and by all accounts ranks Trollope at a high level of great English Authors. I dont discuss the plot of any novels in detail but rest assured you will enjoy. dislike. love and critical of all the leading characters of Popenjoy. Involved are families. friends and enemies of aristocratic English society that include jealousy. affairs. in-laws. and romance in a thoroughly creative manner. Probably should be 4 and a half stars...
