I dont think it gives a technique that one can use in great roles but provides a sure guideline and understanding of the foundational preparation that great singers of the maestri are given and seems to expound on what the great singers are allowed to stick to. Every singer must travel beyond; usually in some way; a method merely because of music; so it doesnt replace the work to be done in the "midnight oil" traversals.But how wonderful it is and what amazing research had to be done to devise a book so thorough that history comes alive. For the most part; singers became what they were taught. Shakespeare/Stockhausen helped produced great recitalists; delle Sedie great Verdians and recitalists; for Verdi may not have wanted to the voice to be too rich; and so on. The question is; can it be used today; and among the pedagogues today how does the music and orchestras and genres of our time morph into new spaces in the body; and more intelligent possibilities.My education was done and over by the time I read this book; I was only interested in the great singes themselves; but I told my professor/advisor of my special project; "whats the point of all this if it is a rehashing" --- but it is not; we learned because of the perspective of each voice; just as Delsarte who is not in this book gave a very useful hint on pianissimo; youll find one or two here that leave you as you found it. Certainly Mr. Coffin had a perfect name for this tedious work of dead masters; but what a great investment of is life. Singing is not dead; and for pedagogues; it lives on today even against wishes.It can be said that some of us have something left over from Garcia; or maybe I do too. I taught a coup de glotte; and hes who I heard it from via Marilyn Horne; although more than one of my maestri had worked with his school; but if I hadnt understood the function of the closure and opening of the glottis somewhat and its pressure factors; I would not be able to sing a note worthy today of someone professional attention; and my students; rare as they are wouldnt have quickly gone on to become soloists and paid choristers; if I may. .... not that easy.So; I dont have the book but I want it. Lets pray; someone kind gives to me. I love pedagogy; and hope one day to have a studio and a name; if not spoken in one breath with my beloved Garcia pere; then at least Melocchi.God Bless even the Twilight of Age when singing bent nails of superstition!!!
