The term Brutalism is used to describe a form of architecture that appeared; mainly in Europe; from around 1945-1975. Uncompromisingly modern; this trend in architecture was both striking and arresting and; perhaps like no other style before or since; aroused extremes of emotion and debate. Some regarded Brutalist buildings as monstrous soulless structures of concrete; steel and glass; whereas others saw the genre as a logical progression; having its own grace and balance. Here; Alexander Clement introduces Brutalism as seen in post-war Britain; giving the historical context before studying a number of key buildings and developments in the fields of civic; educational; commercial; leisure and entertainment; social and private; and ecclesiastical architecture. Stunning photographs clearly show the main characteristics of each building; and there are profiles of the most influential architects. Now that the age of Brutalism is a generation behind us; it is possible to view the movement with a degree of rational reappraisal; study how the style evolved and gauge its effect on Britains urban landscape. Aimed at anyone with an interest in architecture; this book offers such an analysis; and considers the future for Brutalism.

James Cameron is a director Ive always looked up to. but I never really knew how much alike he and I were until I read this book. Now I respect him even more than before. You get a real understanding of the challenges he has faced in trying to live his dream. as well as an appreciation of his passion for science. technology and protecting the environment. I highly recommend this read to anyone with a strong fatalistic streak. those who feel stuck in a rut. people who doubt themselves. and anyone who thinks greatness and success are accidental. inherited or arbitrarily deserved. Although its biographical and not self-help. this book will cure you of entitlement complexes. whiny inner voices and any tendency to give credence to baseless. faceless fears. and spur you to make strides in your own life to reach your goals simply by the power of the life testimony of an exemplary human being who never gave up when the going got tough. One of my favourite quotes from the book is where Cameron states that some people fall into success. some have it handed to them. but the majority carve their own path. He is a man of enormous courage and conviction who has perhaps been blessed with too much vision and intelligence for the time he lives in. I fear that we will only be able to fully appreciate his thoughts and attitude long after he is gone (but hopefully not too late to save the planet). I will always be grateful that I decided to read this book because it has opened my eyes to where I am going. who I want to be and what I have to do. God bless you.
