A valuable guide for todays classical musiciansBy Lisa BarksdaleIm a fan of Eric Booth and purchased his book after taking part in a workshop of his a couple years ago. I admit it took me a little while to get around to reading it; as often happens when your book purchasing speed exceeds your reading capabilities. But I admit I was a little bit skeptical of the title too; and I still feel there might have been a better choice of word besides "Bible" for this otherwise exceptional book. Im not a religious person at all; but Id rather just leave that word to the one book its most commonly associated with and let other books shine for what they are. "Bible" carries too much other baggage with it for my personal taste. That being said; I believe what Mr. Booth means by the word "Bible" in this context is "Resource;" and I did find this book to be a valuable resource. It is a thorough guide for todays teaching artists that can be looked back on again and again. Maybe thats why I found myself pulling out my highlighter and dog-earing pages to revisit later. The world of classical music is changing; and I believe (as I believe Mr. Booth does) that we all need to become teaching artists in order to thrive in our world and help it continue. This book is exciting to read even just for stories it contains of others who are out there teaching; experimenting; struggling; and having success! That in itself is inspiring. This book is also full of advocacy for teaching artists; as well as helpful tips and detailed advice for how to become a more effective teaching artist in different contexts. For me the advice on finding creative ways to present concerts and engage audiences was the most helpful; but I also found the classroom teaching section valuable; even though I am an everyday classroom teacher (as opposed to a visiting teacher) and so not necessarily the target audience for that section. Mr. Booth also frequently points the reader in the direction of other resources; authors; fellow teaching artists; etc; to which you can turn for more information and reading. I especially appreciated a list of resources for defending arts education in schools. That I will definitely be turning to more in the future!Overall I found this an enjoyable and helpful read. I did read it straight through; cover to cover; but it is the kind of book one could read a chapter of here and there and even skip around to sections that seem the most relevant at the moment. I would highly recommend it for any professional musicians or even music enthusiasts bookshelf!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Angela LarsenWas a gift for my teaching artist daughter.1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not just (or even primarily) for music teachersBy David B. LewisA must for any dancer; musician; or actor who wants to be a community advocate; increase the appreciation and cultural relevance of performing arts; build audiences and make money. Explains the entrepreneurial career approach; creating performing opportunities; working within the public school system; interactive concert presentations; private lessons; workshops and one-on-one outreach that occurs in daily life. Recommended for any professional who recognizes it takes more than just talent and virtuoso performances to succeed.
