John Philip Sousa: American Phenomenon (Donald Hunsberger Wind Library)

[audiobook] John Philip Sousa: American Phenomenon (Donald Hunsberger Wind Library) by Paul E. Bierley at Arts-Photography

Description

Dancing Into Darkness is Sondra Horton Fraleighs chronological diary of her deepening understanding of and appreciation for this art form; as she moves from a position of aesthetic response as an audience member to that of assimilation as a student. As a student of Zen and butoh; Fraleigh witnesses her own artistic and personal transformation through essays; poems; interviews; and reflections spanning twelve years of study; much of it in Japan. Numerous performance photographs and original calligraphy by Fraleighs Zen teacher Shodo Akane illuminate her words. The pieces of Dancing Into Darkness cross boundaries; just as butoh anticipates a growing global amalgamation. "Butoh is not an aesthetic movement grafted onto Western dance; " Fraleigh concludes; "and Western dance may be more Eastern than we have been able to see. "

"I dont know. but I hope so." When I saw this book was available as a Kindle publication. I knew I had to know more than I did about Sousa. and I found the book interesting and useful. I would have given it five stars. except that there were some long sections that I skimmed over or skipped altogether. Sousa was certainly an American Phenomenon. I had no idea! I knew that Sousa had written a lot of music that was not marches. but the list of his titles and genres was truly amazing.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good read. It was an arcane time in AmericanaBy James O. Clark IIGood read. It was an arcane time in Americana...when we thought we were Gods pure lambs on Earth...we had not known the bizaar world of Vietnam and terrorism and political cowards and right wing decay yet.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. John Phillip Sousa: American PhenomenonBy Coralie A. PriddyThis is an excellent portrayal of a critically important American patriot. John Phillip Sousa brought the US Marine Band up to the standards it enjoys today. and made concert band music the equal of orchestra selections. He is probably more responsible than anyone else for the rich tradition of concert bands in our schools. colleges. and communities. The fact that he had the finest and best known instrumental group IN the WORLD about a hundred years ago is an awesome claim to fame. I wish more people knew about this fine musician------an American gem!
