Viele Kuuml;nstlerpersouml;nlichkeiten legen eine solche Herangehensweise nahe. Man denke an die mexikanische Kuuml;nstlerin Frida Kahlo (1907 ndash; 1954); die nach einem schweren Busunfall 18 Monate im Bett liegen muss. (...) Man denke an das Gemauml;lde "Selbstbildnis mit verbundenem Ohr" Vincent van Goghs von 1889; das er nach einem Streit mit seinem Freund und Kuuml;nstlerkollegen Gauguin in der Provence anfertigt. In seiner Wut hat sich der Kuuml;nstler den unteren Teil seines linken Ohres abgeschnitten. (...) Zeitgenouml;ssische Kuuml;nstler bedienen sich noch direkter der biografischen Inspiration. Im Jahre 1995 schockiert Tracey Emin durch die Installation eines Zeltes; auf dessen Innenwauml;nde sie mit Stoffresten die Namen ihrer Liebhaber appliziert hat. (...) Und zuletzt uuml;berzeugt der deutsche Photograph Wolfgang Tillmans nicht nur die Jury des Turner-Preises 2000 mit seinen eindringlichen und intimen Bildern; die Szenen und Stillleben aus seinem privaten Umfeld zeigen. Mit dieser Arbeit mouml;chte ich - in Anbetracht der genannten Kuuml;nstler und ihrer Werke - die These aufstellen; dass die Biographie eines Kuuml;nstlers einer der wichtigsten Motivationsfaktoren fuuml;r sein kreatives Schaffen sein kann. Am Beispiel der franzouml;sisch-amerikanischen Kuuml;nstlerin Niki de Saint Phalle werde ich versuchen; diese These zu untermauern. Es soll untersucht werden; wodurch die Kuuml;nstlerin motiviert und inspiriert wurde; sich selbst in ihren Werken zum Ausdruck zu bringen und damit in einen bdquo;kreativen Dialogldquo; (vgl. Niemeyer-Langer 2003; 10) mit ihrer Umwelt zu treten. Mehr noch: Es soll dargestellt werden; dass sich de Saint Phalle hauptsauml;chlich aufgrund der traumatischen Erlebnisse in ihrer Kindheit fuuml;r ein Leben als Kuuml;nstlerin entschied.

The quality of work from well known artists is exceptional. The images are large and excellent. The thought processes and painting procedures written by the artists themselves are detailed and illuminating. This is a very well designed book filled with textbook information as well as some step-by-step demos. Sue St. John has done something amazing for artists (and art lovers): she sought out. selected. and compiled abstract works by dozens of contemporary artists and allowed each artist to describe HOW the piece was created. Its a celebration of the creative process and shows the variety of ways that strong paintings come together. guided by the artists hand (and mind). As a bonus. she includes a few step by step exercises at the end of the book--I cant wait to try these!
