With a range that spans the lyrical; heartfelt songs ldquo; Angel from Montgomery;rdquo; ldquo; Sam Stone;rdquo; and ldquo; Paradiserdquo; to the classic country music parody ldquo; You Never Even Called Me by My Name;rdquo; John Prine is a songwriterrsquo;s songwriter. Across five decades; Prine has created critically acclaimed albumsmdash;John Prine (one of Rolling Stonersquo;s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time); Bruised Orange; and The Missing Yearsmdash;and earned many honors; including two Grammy Awards; a Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting from the Americana Music Association; and induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs have been covered by scores of artists; from Johnny Cash and Miranda Lambert to Bette Midler and 10;000 Maniacs; and have influenced everyone from Roger McGuinn to Kacey Musgraves. Hailed in his early years as the ldquo; new Dylan;rdquo; Prine still counts Bob Dylan among his most enthusiastic fans.In John Prine; Eddie Huffman traces the long arc of Prinersquo;s musical career; beginning with his early; seemingly effortless successes; which led paradoxically not to stardom but to a rich and varied career writing songs that other people have made famous. He recounts the stories; many of them humorous; behind Prinersquo;s best-known songs and discusses all of Prinersquo;s albums as he explores the brilliant records and the ill-advised side trips; the underappreciated gems and the hard-earned comebacks that led Prine to found his own successful record label; Oh Boy Records. This thorough; entertaining treatment gives John Prine his due as one of the most influential songwriters of his generation.

Read his work before; enjoyed his knowledge experience!By Maestro PerryIve read his work before called; "The Practice Science of Drawing many years ago; as I now have it as another reference book in my artist studios repertoire. Ive enjoyed this book so far; as Im also reading excepts of other books of artists materials differ techniques as well; so this work is been really great! This is one that Ive missed when I purchased a few art books on materials techniques that Ive always wanted to buy; but that was empty on the shelf and missed getting a copy at the bookstore.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. not the easiest read; but by far the most ...By Morwennanot the easiest read; but by far the most enlightening and all encompassing of this genre of books in regard to seeing; composing; growing in your art. Slightly dated in a few passages; completely contemporary in most. Speed makes explicit and validates the self-talk and thinking/questioning processes painters (namely myself!) go through while painting.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Valuable info. for both pros and novicesBy 20/20Excellent book for both experienced and novice painters. Some of the phrasing of language is a bit odd here and there; but was apparently how they spoke at the time. Nothing confusing really; just a bit awkward. Speed gives good insight to technique and approach; and gives us the subtleties of color theory and paint application that one doesnt find much in contemporary "how-to" books. A good read with good analyses of old master works as well.
