Foa analyzes the work in a new way finds that the artist was interested in different kinds of vision ways to represent visual experiences. Pointillism the optical mixing of colors are here (p. 88ff.); but; as Foa demonstrates; Seurats investigations into vision go much further.Chapter 1. "Seeing in Series" - Seurat spent parts of 4 summers in 4 port towns on the Normandy coast. In each port he painted a series of seascapes. The canvases depict whatever could be seen from different places as he moved around; using vision bodily movement to make sense of his surroundings (p.25). Chapter 2. "Figuring Out Vision" - Discussions of A Sunday on the Grande Jatte--1884; Poseuses; A Bathing Place--Asnieres; related works. We see Seurat consider conventions of picture-making illusionism. The analysis of the multiple spatial systems in The Grande Jatte (pp. 70-78) is fascinating. Seurats painted borders frames are discussed here (pp. 102-111) in later chapters. Chapter 3. "Seductive Sights" - In Seurats paintings of popular Parisian entertainments (Parade; The Circus; Chahut); vision acts to confound enthrall a passive audience. Chapter 4. "Sight Touch in Black White" - Discussion of Seurats drawings. In a "Postscript;" Foa discusses Seurats painting of the Eiffel Tower (6 x 9 in.).Note to my 12th-grade English teacher: Yes; there is academic jargon here ("foreground" "privilege" used as verbs; for example); but; in my opinion; the authors ideas come through clearly.There are 60 color illustrations 81 bw illus. There is an Index.P.S. The image on the front of the dust jacket is part of Seurats 31 x 25-inch painting; The Seine at Courbevoie; once owned by Paul Signac; now in a private collection. Seurat exhibited it beside The Grande Jatte.
