Recent research has shown that art therapy can be particularly effective for children with autism and related communication disorders. The extensive range of symptoms experienced by autistic people makes them extremely individual in presentation; so any treatment used must be tailored to a range of varying needs. Art Therapy with Children on the Autistic Spectrum presents a new model of practice; which primarily focuses on communication difficulties. The authors describe how negative behaviours and subsequent tension may be alleviated when the autistic child is involved in interactive art making with the therapist. The book is divided into three parts: the first part explores art making processes and art work; with an emphasis on how art can be specifically communicative. A history of autism is presented within the therapeutic context. The second part challenges existing methods of practice within art therapy and considers the most appropriate approaches to treating autistic children. The last part discusses research that lead to the formulation of this specific model - methodology and assessment interventions are analysed; as well as the ongoing development of appropriate assessment instruments. Case studies of art therapy with individual autistic children demonstrate the use of the model and the outcomes. Throughout the book; it is emphasised how art therapy works as an integral part of overall management and treatment approaches to autism. It will be of particular interest to all those professionals working with autistic children and specialists in other communication disorders.

Im going to use it for patterns for painting. spray painting and canvas. I opened it and theres absolutely no way I can color those pages. I looked at each page. and you can feel Keith Harings energy. I think my favorite page is the dogs. But every page is amazing. Its quite unique and theres no way I can even color those pages. This is quite possibly. the coolest thing I own and the coolest thing on .Oh and its large. I was surprised how large the box was. and the pages are over sized. And with thick lines. Unfortunately the back of the pages also are printed. But for me. it doesnt matter. It will be along time before I color it. It means so much to just own it.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great. but...By KnabThe Haring pictures in this coloring book are fantastic. The chosen designs are great for adults or children. I would have loved to keep them all as a "colored in" book for my granddaughter. But.. you must decide which ones you like the best because the pages are just a bit too thin. Colors from one side "bleed" through to the back of the page if using markers. especially very bright colors (which are the Haring "look"). You can use other mediums like pencils or crayons. but you cant really get the vibrant colors with these. It would have been great if each page was printed on only one side so you didnt ruin half of the pages. Or.. you could buy 2 of them.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The prelude at the beginning was a tad long. The book overall was amazing. I even started tearing towards the end because I knew if the incoming end. Loved it! Can you image how his art would have looked if he were still alive today?
