Glencoe; Illinois; "Queen of Suburbs;" has long been heralded as an idyllic place to live. Situated on Lake Michigan in the heart of Chicagos North Shore; Glencoe was first settled in 1835 by Anson Taylor; a young storekeeper. Glencoe began to thrive thanks to one of its famous early residents; Walter Gurnee; president of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad. Gurnee moved to Glencoe in the mid-1850s and in 1855 established a railroad stop across the street from his home. His presence accounts for the towns accessibility and nucleus; but it was the vision of Dr. Alexander Hammond; who arrived in Glencoe in 1867; that helped to shape it into the model suburban town it has become. It is the people of the past and present who are at the heart of this community. This collection of over 200 images captures the heart and spirit of this all-American suburb; from the villages founding and early history as a farming community and utopian settlement to the annual Fourth of July parades that continue to trumpet through the towns center.

Great trip down Memorie LaneBy Andrew VancottWent to Lake George every summer and remember very well the places mentioned in this book thru the travel brochures that we picked up. Unfortunately the only one i can remember going to is Storytown so the others mentioned were a real treat for me. I was sorry that no mention was made of Gaslight Village but i guess that was for adults as well as kids. Thank goodness we have the trips to Storytown preserved on home movies and pictures. All in all it is a great book.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Kiddie Parks of the AdirondacksBy P. MasnatoI spent a few summers in Lake George with my family and I will never forget going to Storytown. The stories surrounding Storytown.Magic Forest. Land of Make Believe. Santas Workshop and the Enchanted Forest are interesting and bring back memories that I will never forget. Thanks to all who had the imagination way before Walt Disney to entertain children in the 1950s- to present day.
