Where is the history of the Jewish community?By JPI received this book with great excitement as a gift on my 60th birthday. The historical information and photographs were interesting; but I was disappointed by the lack of historical information with regard to the Jewish community. My grandfather settled in Indiana in 1913 and started a store; which became THE department store; a business of 7 families and the anchor of the commercial business district. It was one of many business in vibrant downtown Indiana; most owned by members of the small but active Jewish community (50 families). Aside from several pictures of Jewish businesses appearing in a few pictures; the history of commercial Indiana development including banks; manufacturing commercial businesses and prominent citizens does not include any historical information about the vibrant retail business community; Jewish manufacturing businesses and the contribution of the Jewish citizenry to Indianas history; which played a large part in the life of residents of Indiana. Most small town business districts were developed by immigrant Jewish families; and saw their demise with the influx of malls throughout the United States. This historical element was also not discussed at all. There is no picture of the Beth Israel Synagogue among the many descriptions and photos of other religious institutions.I have always been proud of my hometown; but this book was extremely disappointing in its exclusion of the Jewish community.
