The image of Hollywood often translates as some otherworldly dreamscape filled with fantastic lives and fantasy fulfillment. The real deal was carved from the Southern California desert as an outpost northwest of Los Angeles. The movie industry arrived when tumbleweeds were not simply props and actual horsepower pulled the loads. Everyday workers; civic management; and Main Street conventionalities nurtured Hollywoodrsquo;s growth; as did a balmy climate that facilitated outdoor photography and shooting schedules for filmmakers. Splendid vintage photographs from the renowned collections of the Hollywood Heritage Museum and Bison Archives illustrate Hollywoodrsquo;s businesses; homes; and residents during the silent-film era and immediately after; as the Great Depression led up to World War II. These images celebrate Hollywood before and after its annexation into the city of Los Angeles in 1910 and its subsequent ascension as the worldrsquo;s greatest filmmaking center.

The book is a MacNally at his best. Starting with basics. always keeping the reader interested by adding good real life stories. He knows how to write photography books. This is a must for every beginner. Now for the bad part. The Kindle edition is one of the worst I ever had. From my devices (Kindle Keyboard. Paperwhite. iPhone. iPad. Mac) it only works on the I-devices. Bummer! And when it works. it only is some kind of PDF without any reflow or adaption to the device. To be honest. this is not an ebook. This is just some pre-layouted pages transferred as images.Just buy another edition of this great book!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Better than I expectedBy MikeI was looking for a book to take along on a business trip and wanted something smaller than a full size book. This book was terrific for the trip. While many photography books almost need a camera to follow along. this book is so well written that it can stand by itself delivering both knowledge and enjoyment. I spent four days in hotels. enjoyed the read. and couldnt wait to get home and explore what Id learned with my camera. Im a long time film shooter whos just learning to adjust to the digital world - I still think is ASA and not ISO. This was money well spent.
