BairA high school English teacher I once had told us that there was an old literary tradition of the virtuous prostitute. La Dame aux Cameacute;lias falls into that category. Our heroine. Marguerite. is an upper-class courtesan. but she does redeem herself in the eyes of her lover. Armand. and of our unnamed narrator who hears Armands story. To say any more would amount to a spoiler. but the author is telling us that the love is genuinemdash;we can tell that by her actions. As in any love story. there are a number of misunderstandings that need to be worked out. At the same time. hearing the tale from Armands somewhat naive perspective. we find the description of his young love very appealing. This does not have the lively action that the novels of Alexandre Dumas. pegrave;re. would have. but it is a kind of drawing-room novel with plenty of psychology and questions that need to be answered. The story begins with Marguerites estate sale. so it is no spoiler to say that she dies in the course of the story. but this is no more a tragedy than Cyrano de Bergerac. This reviewer did read the book in French. but like Les Miseacute;rables. the English translations usually have kept the French title.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Three StarsBy LaurenEnjoyable enough of a book. but it requires some concentration if you are naturally English-speaking.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Love this book.By Megan MullinsThis is such a good book. I love it and would read it again and again. It is about the most famous French courtesan of the 1800s falling in love with a man who cannot afford her and the relationship between the two. He gets jealous. she has to work. she feels guilty for ruining him and makes him leave her. She dies of tuberculosis. the most romantic disease of the time. Its a beautiful romantic story. Definitely recommend. Suitable for students of the 300 level of college French.
