Space and place have become central to analysis of culture and history in the humanities and social sciences. Making Place examines how people engage the material and social worlds of the urban environment via the rhythms of everyday life and how bodily responses are implicated in the making and experiencing of place. The contributors introduce the concept of spatial ethnography; a new methodological approach that incorporates both material and abstract perspectives in the study of people and place; and encourages consideration of the various levels—from the personal to the planetary—at which spatial change occurs. The book’s case studies come from Costa Rica; Colombia; India; Austria; Italy; the United Kingdom; and the United States.

Excellent collection of historic photographs...By FanI live in Washington DC and am familiar with Gadsbys Tavern; a historic building across the Potomac River in the Old Town section of Alexandria; Virginia (and where I purchased this book). Here; author Gretchen Bulova has compiled an extensive collection of photographs chronicling the history of the building; from its popularity as one of George Washingtons favorite taverns (he had a home just a block away) to its current use as a museum and restaurant. In between were many years where it came close to being lost to neglect or urban renewal. In the 1920s; Veterans of World War I and members of the local American Legion pooled their own resources to save the building from destruction and operated it as a museum until donating it to the city of Alexandria in 1972 in anticipation of the nations bicentennial. Bulova tells an excellent story through her use of photographs. Many presidents and politicians frequented Gadsbys Tavern; which dates back to the late 1700s.I love looking at historic photographs and this book is filled with them.Well done; comprehensive visual look at a piece of history.
