Description

In Germany the end of World War II calls forth images of obliterated cities; hungry refugees; and ghostly monuments to Nazi crimes. Drawing on diaries; photographs; essays; reports; fiction and film; Werner Sollors makes visceral the sorrow and anger; guilt and pride; despondency and resilience of a defeated people--and the paradoxes of occupation.

As far as the Kant emphasis goes; Eldridges book reminded me of a growing body of work (Louden; Munzel) that powerfully overturns the old caricature of Kant as an empty formalist of a moral philosopher. Here with Eldridge the focus is on how communities and historical forces work gradually and conjecturally toward the formation of a moral commonwealth. The Benjamin discussions are also very helpful; and the relation between the two is where Eldridge comes to shine as a kind of mediator or seminar leader for a rather important conversation concerning the conflicting historical ("contingently" thrown) and moral ("universal" end-setting) nature of human beings.
