History of Dupont Circle; great read on the history and society..By JeanMy mother grew up in DC; on the edge or Dupont Circle but mostly in Foggy bottom; but she knew the area well. As a child when we went to Woodies or Garfinkels she could drive down streets and tell you what house was where and who lived were. My grandmother was singer and she would point out the churches in Dupont and around DC where she gave concerts. Now that my mom is gone I want to learn and relive that history of DC; so much of the DC she knew and I knew is gone; when they put in the subway because DC failed to have a historic preservation. This book gives us back that history; and reminds and helps us understand the people and those who built those homes and believed in DC. Its a bit dry in places but go past that and read about those who staked their claim in DC. Im also looking forward to reading his book on Kalorama.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. dupont circleBy Charlene H. Smithmy grandparents lived on conn and r street in dc. MurphyIts just okay - I saw the author giving a lecture on TV (Cspan? or PBS) recently. Not the most exciting of lecturers; but I was interested in the subject matter;having been born in D.C. and although I dont live there now I do visit frequently and really enjoy reading about the history - especially the architecture. Unfortunately the book is about as dry as the lecture. The information is there but its a bit of an effort wading through it. Actually I put it down because it was really getting a bit boring; but I expect Ill get a second inspiration and pick it up again.
