During the first fifty years of American aviation; Long Island was at the center of aircraft innovation and flight. There were more aircraft manufacturers and airports located on Long Island than in any other part of the United States. Due to the extraordinarily high volume of air traffic; Long Island also led the country-if not the world-in aircraft crashes. Long Island Aircraft Crashes: 1909-1959 portrays the daring flights; accidents; and mishaps of pioneer pilots; and the conditions that contributed to many crashes. Long Island ultimately saw the earliest air-traffic control systems; airport lighting; aviation weather reports; paved runways; and professional flight schools. Long Island Aircraft Crashes: 1909-1959 contains captivating images from Mitchel Field and Roosevelt Field; the two most active airfields on Long Island. In addition to airfield activity; this book illustrates some of the first experimental flights over Hempstead Plains; military training at Hazelhurst Field; the L.W.F. Owl bomber (the largest landplane of its time); the worlds first instrument-guided flight; and Amelia Earhart posing with the new Sperry Gyropilot.

This is the first of the Images of America books that I have read. but it certainly will not be the last. I have found that similar books are available for many areas of the country that I am interested in learning more about. I can only hope that they are as wonderful as the book about the Lake Champlain Islands.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. What wonderful memories I have of that placeBy Judy H.I grew up on Lake Champlain in Milton. Vermont. We had a summer camp which eventually was made into a year round home. What wonderful memories I have of that place. This book brought back many of them and even knew a couple of people that were in the book. I loved it and have many of these Images of America books. They are all wonderful and I would highly recommend them! Thanks0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book!By Patricia E. LordWe refer to it a lot!
