The book provides an overview of the architecture of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. citing specific buildings. streets. parks. et cetera. My major complaint with this is the amount of photographs present - there are often pictures to associate with the building being talked about. but more often I found myself browsing with a computer next to me so I could look up pictures of what was being described.Furthermore. this book also includes (as I believe any great nonfiction book should) information and history about the areas being talked about. A description of a housing bloc is not just a description of the walls and the windows. but also a description of the neighborhood. the city. the economy of that city. and that citys place within the history of the Soviet Union. A great read.0 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Documents communisms crimes against architectureBy M. HeissEveryone already knows the worst of it:Communisms crimes against human lifeCommunisms crimes against economic prosperityCommunisms crimes against the environmentThis book fills in another gap:Communisms crimes against beautyCarefully documenting example after example of barren structures. devoid of charm. grim to live in. brutal at every glance. Entire plazas of hideous concrete. Once-lovely city centers transformed into lifeless hulking chunks. Miserable! All of this done on purpose... by leftists who hate your individuality.
