Practical work in writing counterpoint! This volume emphasizes developing analytical and writing skills in the contrapuntal technique of the eighteenth century. The orientation is strongly stylistic; dealing mainly with the polyphony of the late Baroque period. Three aspects are stressed throughout: practical work in writing counterpoint; utilizing various textures; devices; and genre of the period; historical background; to establish the origins of different forms and justify the pedagogical method employed here; analysis of selections from music literature; often in voice-leading reductions. After an opening chapter that reviews some general features of the late Baroque period; there is a brief survey of melodic characteristics; and a study of procedures associated with two; three; and four voices.

Like many raised in the Bluegrass State I thought I knew all the good stories from that "dark and bloody ground." After all; my great grandfather from Arlington; KY; was the doctor who delivered Alben Barkley. My neighbor; a Kentucky colonel from Hopkinsville; makes great Burgoo. My wifes grandfather had a fine Bourbon distillery in Owensboro before Prohibition. And as a Baptist minister who grew up near a seminary; I am an authority on Bombast. However; I didnt know half the great stories in this book. Berry Craigs "True Tales of Old-Time Kentucky Politics: Bombast; Bourbon Burgoo" not only disarmed me. It blew me away with Craigs wonderful tales. I seldom laugh out loud while reading; but I couldnt help myself with this hilarious book. You dont have to be from the Commonwealth of Kentucky to delight in this refreshing book. I suspect that even an aristocratic Virginian or a Damn Yankee would enjoy it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
