The detailed description of the market at Les Halles. people and comestibles included. were so realistic and so gripping. I also felt that the tension that Zola developed between the idealistic Florent who is driven by the trauma of his false arrest and deportation. with the concerns of his sister-in-law. Lisa Quenu. who just wants to keep her family prosperous and happy (as well as beating down her rivals in the market) is a wonderful way of laying out the opposing points of view without taking sides. I tried to read the original text because it was too interesting at first. I read the original text and translation of Au Bonheur des Dames from it. I was addicted to Balzac few years but I seem to be addicted to Zola this time. Also I wanted to go to breathe the air of Paris.
