[audiobook] Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore by Terry Newman at Arts-Photography

Description

Painting and Drawing the Head combines technical instruction; art history references and thoughts on the day-to-day practice of painting the head from life. The rich text; supported by over 100 paintings; gives a thoughtful account of the process of capturing a likeness. After introducing materials; principles and ideas; it follows the course of painting a head in five sittings; providing unique insight and practical comment throughout: from the choice of ground for the picture; through the set-up; the structure of the sessions; guidance on how to compose and what palette to use; all the way to the later stages of developing a portrait over time. There are equipment notes about what to paint on and what to paint with; the importance of looking; and training your eyes; advice on tone; colour; perspective and composition; photographs to explain lighting decisions and set-ups; and notes on painting a self-portrait. Aimed at all artists; particularly portrait painters; and superbly illustrated with 265 colour photographs that explain lighting decisions and set-ups.

Theres a short biological sketch and pictures to go with the writers. The photographs in this book are amazing although none of them are in color. This book cleverly describes the synchronicity of the fashion and literary worlds. Signature looks of writers such as their glasses. head scarves and hats. suits. and hair demonstrate the deliberateness of their style that translated into their writing. I enjoyed seeing the full-page. vivid photographs of some of the worlds greatest writers such as George Sand. Edgar Allan Poe. T.S. Eliot. Mark Twain. Sylvia Plath. F. Scott Fitzgerald. Susan Sontag and Tom Wolfe. The writers clothing was so distinctive that it contributed to their personas in a way that the ordinariness of their physicality couldnt. This would make a perfect gift book for anyone into literature! I only wished that even more writers and their wardrobe were covered.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Breathtaking images and stories of literary greats; a mesmerizing glimpseBy outwestThere is simply something to be said about how truly great and inspirational writers have a mindset and worldview that is unlike what most people may have. What this book shows is that this mindset and self-image so often translates into an incredible and unique sense of style. Compiling vintage images of many great authors like Beckett. Plath. Wilde. and Donna Tartt with quotes. anecdotes and stories. this book provides a brief immersion into the authors themselves. Just looking at the cover image can leave you breathless.A truly unique and mesmerizing book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun!By SusanFascinating!
