Belliphonic Sound: A New Perspective of a Soliders LifeBy Dr. Debra Jan BibelAs music reviewer; I have a deep appreciation of ambient sound and its effects on memory and physiology. This unique and important book strikes a chord because even though we have not heard the sound of a Huey [Bell UH-1 Iroquois] helicopter in decades (archived on YouTube); the blades particular baritone staccato chopping is etched in my psyche; it induces tension even today; as it epitomizes the Sixties and my own military experience;1967-1976. Author Daughtry is an anthropological ethnomusicologist and his encompassing examination of the sounds and music of a given recent war advances a historic yet hardly examined principle [for instance; Scottish bagpipes; Ottoman kettle trumps and trumpets; beating of shields; and more recently (also archived on YouTube) the V-1 buzz flying bombs over London and banzai shouting]. The music of war has been scholarly approached before; but the entire sonic field has only been the stuff of anecdotes; yet it is sound that can induce posttraumatic stress disorder episodes.The introductory Chapter 1 immediately and acutely opens us to new awareness; and suddenly we are mindful of every distinct sound around us and its relationships. Soldiers listen intently because their identifications and interpretations may save their life. Indeed; training includes to "stop-look-listen-smell;" but on the battlefield; sound often arrives first. As the reader follows the interviews with soldiers and civilians; supplemented by in-combat narrations on tape and videos; our imagination produces a soundscape of the battlefield (belliphone) that affects its participants; acting as triggers to actions and cascades of emotions. Every sound becomes crucial: vehicular sounds on land and air; communications by loudspeakers; civilian electric generators; the adhan call to prayer; the distinct signatures of weapon firing and explosives recognized as to caliber; type; and location. [Please see Comment.] Daughtry divides location of sounds within zones: from distantly Audible Inaudible; Narrational; Tactical; to very close Traumatic. His analyses of Auditory Regimes; Sonic Campaigns; Acoustic Territories distinguish hearing versus listening; discuss the nature of sound itself; the role of place; and the type of violence [risk] and personal experience. He offers some movie examples: Heartbreak Ridge; Apocalypse Now; Red Badge of Courage; and especially Casablanca; where in the scene of a Paris cafe as the Germans are approaching; veteran Rick [from the Spanish Civil War] casually tells Ilsa that the boom is a new German 77 gun and he estimates the distance as 35 miles. Also mentioned is the use of battle noise simulators during the war and the resurrected use by the United States of radio stations to issue propaganda amid music [precedent: Tokyo Rose and Lord Haw-Haw]. Music is the topic of the final sections; and the portable; individualized iPod and other .mp3 players added a new dimension. Music; of course; can motivate courage as well as help relaxation; it connects the soldier to home; and it served to regulate moods before; during; and after combat. Music becomes associated with time and place. Music can also be a weapon when amplified and broadcast before a battle. The book is a thorough study of the importance and role of sound in hazardous situations; and it offers a new way of understanding the life of a soldier.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
