Dicks Delicatessen between Oakland and Bement on Castleton is still open for business and has been in that location since; if Im not mistaken; the late 1930s. Much coverage was given to Sacred Heart; which is fine by me since I grew up in that parish. In fact; I was one of the people who organized the 50th Anniversary of our graduation; held last October at The Staaten. I have the original class pictures; taken on the front steps of the school; and the updated class picture taken the night of the reunion...if the author would like copies for future updates of this book; she can contact me. As a child; I was told that Father Dennis had been captured and tortured by the Japanese; having bamboo stuck under fingernails and toenails and the tip of his tongue cut off. I was also told that several of his toes were eventually cut off...whether by his captors or for health reasons after he was released; I dont know. Were these statements true? I wonder. If they were; though; that was certainly worth mention...it raises the man to heroic proportions in ones estimation of him. The other thing I noticed was that there were places included that were not in West Brighton; the book store on Victory Boulevard near Clove Road being one of them. To the best of my knowledge; this area is known as Sunnyside; not West Brighton.I learned a lot from the book and enjoyed strolling through the West Brighton I knew and loved so well. Kudos to the authors!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this was the best of all the books I purchased about Staten IslandBy Carolyn MorenoTo me; this was the best of all the books I purchased about Staten Island. I was born and raised in West Brighton. There have been many changes to the Island; but it is still "home".0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. West Brighton(Images of America)By bullthistleA stroll down memory lane and also a learning experience never realizing that before S.I. was a part of NYC that it had volunteer fire departments. Also never knew who Joseph Merrill was other then ferry being named after him; but also a Medal of Honor recipient and also went to the same grammar school as me. Eye opening; but some things left out like the train; etc.
