MurphyThis wonderful book opens up with the introduction; "Saint Peters College is more than a group of buildings on Kennedy Boulevard; it is the sum of the experiences of all who have been fortunate to spend some time there." In 127 pages of words and photographs; the authors take us on a journey of those experiences; beginning with the initial decision of the Bishop of Newark to invite the Jesuits into his diocese in 1870; the official founding of the College in 1872; its closing and re-opening in the early half of the 20th century up to present day. We see the development of the commuter; all-male liberal arts college to its decision to admit women; open dormitories and to respond to the changing world by offering an increasingly diverse number of majors and advanced degrees. Yet; throughout the numerous changes and developments the College has undergone; we see a consistency in its emphasis of care for the individual student and a loyalty to the Jesuit values that founded it.The style of this book makes it ideal for any reader. It proceeds at an agreeable pace where the reader is able to get a good grasp on each aspect of the story and then move on. It leaves one with a much deeper and fuller understanding of the history of St. Peters College without needlessly getting bogged down in excessive details. The photographs are also a great touch; being able to see the numerous political figures and celebrities who have visited the College; the buildings in their original form; the academic gowns that seniors used to have to wear to class; and much more.Reading this book was a real treat. As an alumnus; it gave me a feeling similar to looking through an old family album; a great warmth of familiarity of the things I knew and an appreciation for that which I learned. I dont think I can recommend this book enough.
