An excellent contribution to understanding the mystery of DylanBy Henry BloncarteI devoured this book fast. firstly because Im a lifelong listener to Dylans poetry. and secondly because the shape of McCarrons argument provides a new. thought-provoking light to cast on Dylans mystery. He takes complex psychological theory and advances it cogently it to explore the life of a figure who has been evasive when it comes to his acts art. The theory he uses (script theory) is no cakewalk. but here it is made accessible. and whats even better is that it really does seem to be a worthwhile way to explore Dylans transformations. The chapters lay out a form quality that persists across these transformations. which pay heed to Dylans religiosity and the anxieties of the last century. Its a helluva task. and its executed well here. In the hands of a lesser writer. this analysis could have come across as wooden. or reductive. But McCarron makes a solid contribution to understanding one of the most productive and mysterious artists of our time and introduces to a large audience the power that scripts play in shaping inner lives.
