The advent of photography revolutionized perception; making visible what was once impossible to see with the human eye. In At the Edge of Sight; Shawn Michelle Smith engages these dynamics of seeing and not seeing; focusing attention as much on absence as presence; on the invisible as the visible. Exploring the limits of photography and vision; she asks: What fails to register photographically; and what remains beyond the frame? What is hidden by design; and what is obscured by cultural blindness? Smith studies manifestations of photographys brush with the unseen in her own photographic work and across the wide-ranging images of early American photographers; including F. Holland Day; Eadweard Muybridge; Andrew J. Russell; Chansonetta Stanley Emmons; and Augustus Washington. She concludes by showing how concerns raised in the nineteenth century remain pertinent today in the photographs of Abu Ghraib. Ultimately; Smith explores the capacity of photography to reveal what remains beyond the edge of sight.

Cute ebook offered for free right...only 14 animals are featured so not exactly an encyclopedia...By ElizabethThe pictures in this book are pretty cool for kids. The format for this is a little different than most of the Baby Professor books in this series which usually have a picture with a paragraph and facts on one page. Then the next page is just a photo. This book has a picture and description of the picture on each page so you really get twice the information which is awesome. Keep in mind though; this Baby Professor book is short like most of them; only 14 animals are featured so I wouldnt call it an encyclopedia. It would also be nice if these books went into more detail. FThere are about 200 books in this ebook series that are offered in the kindle store for either free or for .99cent;. You cant really go wrong with the books offered for free. There is a variety of subjects covered and most of the books follow about the same format. You can take a peek inside the books by clicking "Look Inside" and this is pretty much what you get in each book.Overall; I do like theses books for their wonderful pictures. It would be nice if the books went into more detail but they are very basic books that I hope will get my kids interested in finding more about each subject.I plan on keeping these books on my iPad for down time for my kids when they get bored waiting different places like the doctors office or practice for a sibling. I sometimes watch a friends 3 year old daughter and she likes to look through the pictures on my phone. I plan on showing her these books to keep her entertained. I think she will love them.***** I received this ebook for free in exchange for my honest review. *****0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved the animals; but did not expect dinosaurs!By KAC ReviewsI have two young boys that love learning about animals. Everywhere you look you can find books with animals we all know and love. However; this is the first book I have come across that is devoted to teaching children about extinct animals.Entinct Amials of The World e-book is a short and fun read for children of all ages. Even adults can learn some interesting facts. This book contains one extinct animal on each page along with a picture and a brief explanation of that animal. Since the animals have been long extinct the pictures are computer generated but they are still detailed; vivid images. My four year old son loved this book. Mainly because there were dinosaurs. I thought it a little strange that the first page says humans activities can lead to extinction and the very next page is a dinosaur. ??? That could be confusing to a child; in my opinion. I liked the pictures and also enjoyed the descriptions of each animal. I wish there were not dinosaurs in this book; but my son loved it. Overall; its a great short; informative read for kids. I recommend it!I did receive this book at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review. I hope you found it helpful!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful pictures and Easy to UnderstandBy TwoGreenBeansFamilyI was excited to read this to my 2; 4 and 6 year olds. The pictures in this book are AMAZING. They animals looked incredibly realistic and my kids were fascinated. They asked lots of questions afterwards and we had a great little conversation about extinction and its causes. The only little issues that I had with the book was that several pages used the wrong verb tense and also the paragraphs often switched between past and present tense. My oldest recognized that and was slightly confused my the tense changes and asked if it meant that they werent extinct. Also; half of the measurements were in meters and kilograms and half were in feet and pounds. Its not a huge issue but I wish that the author was more consistent. I received this book for free but will definitely be looking for more of this series as my older 3 really enjoyed it.My kids wanted to read it three times in a row so Id say this was a win!
