A moving tale of exploitation; adjustment; empathy and moderate contentmentBy Anthony C WoodsThis recap of Franz Taiboschs (aka Clicko) is filled with pathos; empathy; and an implicit condemnation of exploitation of putative societal misfits (i.e.; freaks"). If you dont care much for circus history; this book will try your patience; but its telling is a must to grasp Clickos trancontinental saga; from his mysterious South African provenance (was he for example a bushman from the Kalahari desert; or "Coloured " urbanite from Cape?) to his early career in Europe by a money-hungry "owner"; from a maturing career with new and empathetic "guardians" in America; to his final bow and spiritual redemption amidst a circle of friends who had essentially embraced him as family. Finally; Theres gentle condemnation of; but empathy for Clickos alleged complicity in confirming anti- African stereotypes of inferior intellect; wild savagery and animalistic tendencies. However; this charge takes nothing away from the authors fair and balanced portrayal of an alienated soul caught in the vortex of forces way beyond his control. Indeed; Clickos heroic adjustment to his ever-changing circumstances is a triumph of the human spirit and is the leitmotif the author gifts to the reader.
